Haunted Saloon - Grand Hotel
Big Nose Kates Saloon
Tombstone AZ

Location:

417 E. Allen Street
Tombstone, Arizona 85638.

The Story: Located in the well-known ghost town of Tombstone, is the haunted saloon of Big Nose Kate, whose real name was Mary Katherine Harmony. She was a flamboyant and promiscuous woman who owned the place in the 1800's. Back in the 1800's, Big Nose Kates Saloon was once the Grand Hotel who hosted infamous personalities such as Wyatt and Virgin Earp, Doc Holliday, as well as the Clantons and McLaury's.

And as legend and folk lore have it, in this Grand Hotel of Tombstone AZ was a janitor and odd job man, known simply as "The Swamper". He was a trusted and honest helper who was given his accommodations as part of his hard earned pay. This was his own special bedroom which was located in the hotel's dark basement. He would stay within his private domain during off hours where no guests were invited and he kept his passion for silver a secret.

Swamper's RoomRumor has it that the basement was deep enough below the surface of the ground to afford entrance into one of the catacombing mine shafts which ran underground beneath the hotel as well as most of Tombstone. "The Swamper" spent many painstaking hours over a period of years tunneling an entrance into the shaft during his off hours. He planned on gaining access to a thick vein of silver once the digging was completed. He extracted ounce upon ounce of glorious silver nuggets and the mine entrance is still a prominent feature of the Big Nose Kate bar's basement.

Nobody really knows if "The Swamper" spent his silver or if he hoarded it to an unknown niche somewhere on the premises of the Grand Hotel. However, several current employees of the now "Big Nose Kates saloon" will swear that they have seen a ghost wandering the halls and stairs. It has been decided that the ghost is indeed "The Swamper" and that his afterlife is spent protecting the silver that may still perhaps be buried somewhere in this legendary building of Tombstone AZ.

Many town folk and employees of the saloon will tell ghost stories of "The Swamper" and have even reported phenomena's within the building. There is said to have been movement of objects, including glasses on the bar and mannequins on the false balcony. They say there is unusual areas of extreme cold and gusts of cold air within the saloon as well as unexplainable noises, including the sounds of footsteps in the basement and in the saloon after closing. Female staff have been pushed on the lower section of the back stairs that lead to the basement and some reported disembodied voices.
