Will Turner - Becoming Will Turner

After getting everything settled with your Will Turner Halloween costume and accessories, there is still one more very important subject that we need to cover. A costume is just a costume unless you can in essence "become" the character that you are attempting to portray. We are going to cover the basics, but the very best thing that you can do to figure out just how to become Will Turner is to study the "Pirates of The Caribbean" trilogy. Will Turner is a hard character to portray, as he is at his best, clever, heroic and courageous. He can also be preoccupied and brooding. As Captain Jack Sparrow as a more ostentatious approach on life, his character is much less difficult to portray as Will Turner. Now, just the costume, if well thought out could stand a chance in a competition. But generally the ones that truly shine are the ones that get "into character". To figure out the character of Will Turner, you have to break down his character and figure out what "makes him tick" so to speak. So lets start with the basics, in the "Pirates of The Caribbean, The Curse Of The Black Pearl" he is a blacksmiths apprentice that does not get credit for his fine sword craftsmanship, he is sometimes not so secretly in love with the governors daughter "Elizabeth Swan". He ends up being a brave, honest, heroic and a bit naive. To portray that type of character proves to be rather difficult. You have to hold your self very honorable, almost proud. Keep your chin up, not in an arrogant fashion... but someone with a sense of pride. You must remember to be very courteous, as if you were really in Will Turner's situation socially. Keep in mind how he speaks, the tone, and remember when he insists on calling Elizabeth Swan "Miss Swan", even when she persistently asks him to call her Elizabeth. If you would prefer to portray Will Turner more as he plays in the "Pirates of The Caribbean, Dead Man's Chest", then you should implement more outgoing, and almost pirate characteristics. It seem as though Will Turner was forced to transition from naive boy to world-wise man.

Keep in mind that the very best thing that you can do to figure out the "key" to Will Turner is, watch the "Pirates of The Caribbean" movies very carefully. It is a good idea to have a notepad with you to write down certain ways that he does things, and then practice them. In a sense, you need to become an actor to correctly portray Will Turner. Think of it as a school play, some of us may have to think back further then others, but treat it like that. If you are really wanting to be the best Will Turner possible, you have to live the character for that special night. There is so much more then just throwing on a costume, but if carried out correctly, nobody should forget the night that Will Turner was at their Halloween party!
